of Thesis Presented to the Graduate School of the University of Florida in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts EFFECTS OF SPECTRAL SLOPE ON PERCEIVED BREATHINESS IN VOWELS By Mario Alberto Landera August 2006 Chair: Rahul Shrivastav Major Department: Communication Sciences and Disorders Previous studies have indicated that breathiness is correlated with measures of perturbation, aspiration noise, signal-to-noise ratio, first harmonic amplitude, and spectral slope. However, the role of spectral slope on perceived breathiness remains unclear. In a recent study, it was observed that varying spectral slope resulted in minimal changes on the perceived breathiness for synthetic vowels. However, the stimuli tested in this experiment included a relatively narrow range of spectral slope variation. The goal of the present experiment was to verify the role of spectral slope changes on the perception of breathiness by testing stimuli that had a wider range of variation in spectral slope and a constant signal-to-noise ratio. Ten voices (5 male and 5 female) representing various levels of breathiness were synthesized using a Klatt-synthesizer. Each of these voices was manipulated to generate two continua varying in their spectral slope from -3 dB/octave to -30 dB/octave. One continuum (CC series) had a constant cutoff frequency of 500 Hz, while the other continuum (VC series) had a cutoff frequency between the second harmonic (H2) and the third harmonic (H3). Ten listeners judged the degree of

Acoustic correlates of breathy vocal quality.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of several acoustic measures in predicting breathiness ratings. Recordings were made of eight normal men and seven normal women producing normally phonated, moderately breathy, and very breathy sustained vowels. Twenty listeners rated the degree of breathiness using a direct magnitude estimation procedure. Acoustic measures were made o...

Acoustic correlates of breathy vocal quality: dysphonic voices and continuous speech.

In an earlier study, we evaluated the effectiveness of several acoustic measures in predicting breathiness ratings for sustained vowels spoken by nonpathological talkers who were asked to produce nonbreathy, moderately breathy, and very breathy phonation (Hillenbrand, Cleveland, & Erickson, 1994). The purpose of the present study was to extend these results to speakers with laryngeal pathologie...

Guttural vowels and guttural co-articulation in Ju∣'hoansi

Ju|’hoansi contains parallel glottalization, breathiness and epiglottalization on consonants and vowels, as well as uvularization on consonants. There are voice quality cues associated with epiglottalized vowels that parallel those found with breathy and glottalized vowels. There is also guttural coarticulation, whereby aspirated, glottalized, uvularized and epiglottalized consonants spread aco...

Perception of aperiodicities in synthetically generated voices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate univariate relationships between perceived dysphonia and variation in pitch perturbation, amplitude perturbation, and additive noise. A time-domain, pitch-synchronous synthesis technique was used to generate sustained vowels varying in each of the three acoustic dimensions. A panel of trained listeners provided direct magnitude estimates of roughness...

Relation of perceived breathiness to laryngeal kinematics and acoustic measures based on computational modeling.

PURPOSE In this study, the authors sought to determine (a) how specific vocal fold structural and vibratory features relate to breathy voice quality and (b) the relation of perceived breathiness to 4 acoustic correlates of breathiness. METHOD A computational, kinematic model of the vocal fold medial surfaces was used to specify features of vocal fold structure and vibration in a manner consis...
